Belarusian Independent Bologna Committee is launching a series of articles with stories of fired university teachers. We cite articles in their entirety, without editing. All authors could hide the names of universities and departments for security reasons.

Times of revolutions do not determine the fate of people, we determine them ourselves,

making revolutions, first in our thinking, and then in our lives

We often choose the professions of people who made the strongest impression on us in the childhood, and became an authority for us, we want to become like them. So it was with me. At school, I was lucky to meet a wonderful teacher of the Belarusian language and literature, Nikolai Nikolayevich, he was also a teacher at the philological faculty of the Belarusian State University. It was Nikolai Nikolaevich who instilled love for our country, its history, language, literature of Belarus, and also became an example of a teacher, about whom they say "a teacher from God."
It was at that time that the history and fate of Belarusians touched me to the core. Few people abroad know that a few centuries ago Belarusians were free and prosperous people. Many great scientists and educators known all over the world were born among them, such as: Francysk Skaryna, Marc Chagall, Tadeusz Kosciuszko and others.

About myself

My name is Vadim Antipov. I worked at BSUIR, was a teacher of logic and philosophy at the faculty of Computer Science and Networks, at the Department of Philosophy. Graduated from Belarusian State University, Faculty of Philosophy.

The semester began in September, when the protests in Belarus were at their peak.

The university quickly developed a position like "the university is out of politics." For every university meeting, there were main points that in no case should any teacher dare to participate in protest events, that he should not show his political will, because this will negatively affect the university, the educational process, etc.

Sergei, teacher, Ph.D., associate professor, experience as an associate professor - 15 years.

I resigned from the university on the basis of conscience in September 2020, because I had to go to teach to people who participated in election fraud and who organized violence against their own people. After taking part in the protest, I was arrested, imprisoned, and sentenced under an administrative article, the so-called "people's article" 23.34. During the detention I was subjected to physical and moral violence by police and prison officials.

My dismissal for political reasons was probably the first – on September 21, 2020. But such a reason was not listed in the workbook or other documents.

On September 12, 2020, I was released from Ivanovo remand prison and after that I missed my working day - the 14th, when I was replaced by a colleague, but unofficially. BSU took advantage of this opportunity. As soon as I arrived, the dean of the Radiophysics Faculty asked me to write an explanatory note about my absence. The imprisonment itself was not taken into account, but that unofficial replacement was already a reason for dismissal.

The repressions in Belarusian Academy always had a face: might it be a rector, a dean or a proffessor responsible for the politically motivated expulsions and firings. "Student Observatory" collected the names and cases to present the Black Book in Academia.

We urge international actors: universities, research programmes, EU institutions - to implement a personal responsibility mechanisms for listed below people, excluding them from visit delegations and common projects.
